THE experience Al Rayyan and Lekhwiya players gained from the AFC Champions League matches against Iranian clubs would help the Qatar national team, according to captain Ibrahim Majed.
“Our clubs, Rayyan and Lekhwiya, did well against Persepolis and Esteghlal Khouzestan respectively in their recent games in the AFC Champions League. They could pass on some vital information about rival players to us. It should help raise our level of confidence,” Ibrahim told Doha Stadium Plus.
“The Doha weather is good and the mood at our training has been great. Iran are the group leaders, but we’ve reasons to feel confident because we’ve generally done well against them in the past, even in away matches. In the first game of this round in Tehran, we had held them goalless almost until the end before conceding two goals in injury time. We’re at home this time and we want to do well,” said the Al Sadd defender.
Ibrahim said the friendly against Azerbaijan was quite useful.
“We lost the game 1-2, but results aren’t important in such matches. Azerbaijan surprised us with their physique and pressing. It was the type of preparation we wanted as Iran are also expected to come hard at us,” said Ibrahim, who has been a consistent performer with both Sadd and the national team.
