TOP cueist Waleed Majed will spearhead Qatar’s challenge in Stage 2 of the 25th World 9-Ball Pool Championship, which begins at the Al Arabi Sports Club on Saturday.
Stage 1, which got under way last Monday, is played on a single elimination, race-to-seven format, and it will decide the 12 qualifiers who will join the directly-seeded 116 players in Stage 2.
Waleed is the only Qatari to have made it to last 16 of the World Pool Billiards Association (WPBA) sanctioned event. He accomplished it at the 2014 edition, which the Netherlands’ Niels Feijen won.
Other Qatari cueists in the fray for the double elimination, race-to-nine Stage 2 include Bashar Hussein, Ali Al Obaidly, Abdullatif Al Fawal, Ali Abdulhadi and Mohammad Saeed.
Chinese Taipei’s K Pin Yi is the defending champion of the event, which the Qatar Billiards and Snooker Federation (QBSF) is hosting for the seventh straight year.
“All arrangements are in place and we’re using 16 latest model Wiraka tables for the championship. The cream of players are in the fray and we hope the competition will help our youngsters gain some valuable experience,” said QBSF General Secretary Mohammed Salem Al Nuami.
