THE EL JAISH juggernaut rolls on. Fresh from their Qatar League triumph, the Armymen made it two titles in as many weeks after winning the Qatar Cup.
In the final played at the Qatar Handball Association (QHA) Hall last week, they beat GCC champions Al Gharafa 27-18.
The winners led 17-10 at the halfway mark and continued with the same gusto after the change of ends.
Darko Stanic was outstanding in front of the goal while centre players Kamalaldin Mallash, pivot Issam Tej and right-back Zarko Markovic proved too hot to handle for Gharafa.
For Gharafa, national players Abdulrazaqq Murad and Ahmed Abdelhak were the saving graces. But they lacked support and after conceding a seven-point lead at half-time, Gharafa had to be content playing catch up for most of the time.
For the record, it was Jaish’s fifth title and third in a row.
They will now turn their attention to the season-ending Emir’s Cup, the qualifiers of which are currently on.
“It would be great if we can end the season by winning the Emir’s Cup as well. Hats off to the team. Consistency was the key to our success,” said Jaish skipper Hassan Mabrouk as he received the trophy from QHA President Ahmed Mohammed Abdulrab Al Shaabi.
Jaish coach Toni Gerona also spoke about ending the season on a high.
“Last season we had won all three titles. It would be good if we can do an encore this time. The players are in good form and capable of doing it,” he said.
