Tough competition expected at Qatar Open Amateur Championship

Doha: The WAGR-2018 Qatar Open Amateur Golf Championship will be held at the Doha Golf Club Championship Course from January 25 to 27.

The 32nd edition of the prestigious event, to be held in three-day individual stroke play format, will see around 100 golfers form 40 countries vying for honours.

The winner of the event will also get a berth in the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters to be held in February.

Qatar Golf Association Executive Director Mohamed Al Naimi said the competition had improved a lot in scope over the years.

“The event is getting better all the time," said Al Naimi at the pre-event Press conference. “I would like to thank our sponsors for making this event a grand success over the years. And also I would like to wish all players the very best.”

Qatar Golf Association signed a deal with a new sponsor Royal Air Maroc. 

Qatar Golf Association Board Member Mohammed Al Muhanadi, Saeed Al Hajri, Adil Khaloufi (both Royal Air Maroc) and representatives of InterContinental Doha Hotel and Al Muftah Rent a Car were present at the event.

A host of Qataris including Abdul Aziz Al Boainin, Adel Al Hamad, Jeham Al Kuwari, Mohammed Fahad Al Naimi, Ali Al Shahrani, Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Saleh Ali Musbah Al Kaabi, Abdulaziz Al Muhanedi, Abdulrahman Al Shahrani, will compete in the event while Pierre Verlaar of the Netherlands is coming to defend his title.

This edition of the championship will be even more challenging as 11 professionals —Anwar Ali, Michele Cea, Carlos Del Moral, Sean Einhaus, Michael Robert Elliott, Jean  Michel  Hall, Simon Khan, Paul Maisey, Jordan Massey, Langasque Romain, Michaell-James Steyn — will also compete for top honours.

The long list of sponsors and supporters include Royal Air Maroc, InterContinental Doha Hotel, Al Muftah Rent a Car, Alkalive water,  Doha Golf Club, Qatar Olympic Committee and Qatar Golf Association.
