Doha: The Qatar Basketball Federation Secretary General Ali Saeed Al Malki, who was appointed as the President of the GCC Organising Committee last week, said efforts are on to make the sport popular in the region.
“We need to generate initiatives that’ll bring the sport to the forefront. There’s a need to create FIBA-sanctioned elite competition which can help to develop the sport at the grass-root level and thereby raise the standard in the region,” Al Malki told www.dohastadiumplus.com.
“I’m honored to lead and work with other GCC members. We’ll work together to build a strong base,” he added.
The official, who attended the GCC Organising Committee meeting in Muscat, Oman, last week, exuded confidence the sport will become more popular with the youth in future.
“The sport continues to grow worldwide and the GCC regions aren’t immune to this growth. The several FIBA reports indicate the participation is on the rise and has become very popular. The IOC also included 3x3 as an Olympic sport. We should take advantage of this opportunity,” said Al Malki.
