‘Table tennis can improve in Qatar’

INTERNATIONAL Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) President Thomas Weikert, who was in Doha recently for the World Tour Platinum Qatar Open, praised Qatar’s modern infrastructure and exuded confidence that the country could host more major events in future.

What do you think of Doha?

I came here for the first time during the ITTF World Championships in 2004. Doha has changed a lot. It’s now a modern city with excellent infrastructure. Any sport can get good promotion here.

What did you like the most about Doha?

There’re many landmarks like the Doha Corniche, Souq Waqif and Museum of Islamic Art, but I loved ASPIRE Academy the most. It’s nice. I’ve heard rave reviews of it from my friends in Germany, particularly those at Bayern Munich who come here for their winter training camp every year.

Do you follow any Qatari team?

The handball team is very strong. Qatar also has some good athletes. Table tennis can improve in the country.
