SHEIKH Jassim bin Thamer Al Thani has been elected as the new president of Al Gharafa Sports Club. The decision was taken at the annual general assembly last week after the incumbent Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Thani decided not to stand for another term.
“I thank the outgoing president for his work over the years. He has significantly contributed to the club’s success,” said Sheikh Jassim, a former vice-president of the Qatar Olympic Committee.
Meanwhile, Gharafa drew 1-1 with Bahraini side Al Hidd in a friendly in Doha last week.
The visitors took an early lead, but the Cheetahs fought back to equalise in the 63rd minute through Hungarian striker Kristian Nemeth.
Gharafa will play four more friendlies before the Qatar Stars League starts by the middle of next month.
Pedro Caixinia’s side will take on Markhiya on Saturday followed by a match against a yet-to-be-decided Dubai club on August 27.
Gharafa, who finished ninth last season, will face Al Arabi on September 3 while their last preparatory game will be against Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli on September 7.
