‘Season of great hope for me and my team’

Doha: Ali Ferydoon is looking forward to the 2018-19 season QNB Stars League with great hopes, for he has many points to prove. The No.9 justified his billing as Al Ahli’s main striker by scoring both goals in their 2-0 victory over Qatar SC in Week 2.

Ali was back at Al Ahli ahead of this season and the hunger for success is now all the more evident in his game.

In an Exclusive Interview with QSL Online, the stout striker opens up about a wide range of topics.

How did you feel at the start of 2018-19 QNB Stars League season?

It’s a season of great hope for our team and also for me, personally. I was keen to have rejoined Al Ahli, where I played a few seasons ago before I left for Al Shamal.

What’s your assessment of Al Ahli after the completion of four rounds of matches?

We had a losing start, going down to Al Rayyan. However, we made a strong statement against Qatar SC. But then, the defeats to Umm Salal and Al Gharafa, both by conceding four goals, dented our spirit. Despite the setbacks, I’m sure we’ll come back.

How did Al Ahli’s preparations go in the pre-season?

We had a week-long camp in Salalah, Oman, where the players went through their paces. We completed our preparations in Doha after returning from the camp.

How do you rate your two-goal display against Qatar SC?

We badly needed three points and we got them. I was extremely happy that I could score both goals.

What went wrong in the games against Umm Salal and Al Gharafa?

We had many problems in the forms of injury and suspension. We just couldn’t find our way. We’ll continue to work hard, so we can improve our performance.

What’s your target this season?

I must get to play more and more matches this season. I want to help Al Ahli finish in a respectable position in the QNB Stars League. I’m also keen to get back into the Qatar national team.

How do you rate the Al Ahli squad this season?

The squad is a good mix of youth and experience, with seven or eight new players coming in this season. Dutch midfielder Nigel de Jong and Iranian defender Mohammed Reza are much-experienced players.

I would like to thank Al Ahli Sports Club President Sheikh Ahmed bin Hamad Al Thani for the trust shown in me. We’re eager to make our passionate fans happy.

How is it playing under Czech coach Milan Macala?

He’s a widely-travelled coach. He’s like a father figure to us. While being strict, he’s friendly with us and defends the players.
