QATAR’S Tala Alaa Abujbara won the women’s CW1X title, the only gold for the hosts, at the inaugural GCC Championships at the Doha Corniche last week.
Abujbara finished ahead of UAE’s Maha Ahmed Al Baloushi and Bahrain’s Lubna Fayez Al Fayez.
“I’m really happy to claim the gold in the event’s first edition. I hope to win more laurels for the country,” said Abujbara.
Qatar finished third with one gold and three bronze medals. The UAE won the overall title and Kuwait came second.
As many as 41 competitors, including women, were seen in action. Competitions were held in men’s (CM1X) and women’s solo (CW1X), men’s double sculls (CM2X) and men’s coxed quadruple sculls (CM4X+).
Qatar’s Badreeddin Al Madani came third in the men’s CM1X which was won by UAE’s Hamad Saeed Al Matrooshi while Kuwait’s Abdulrahman Al Safran finished second.
Qataris Abdulaziz Adel Faraj and Ali Abdullah Al Mannai also came third, in the men’s double sculls CM2X while the hosts’ third bronze came in the men’s quadruple sculls.
“The competition will further help in developing the sport in the region,” said Qatar Sailing and Marine Sports Federation President Khalifa Mohammed Al Suwaidi.
