Doha: Qatar’s Bassem Hemeida ran a superb race but had to settle for silver in 400M hurdles at the IAAF Under-20 Championships in Tampere, Finland, on Saturday.
South African Sokwakhana Zazini pipped Hemeida at the post to win gold 49.42. Hemeida, who ran the race of his life, clocked 49.59 to slice almost a whole second from his previous best of 50.55.
“This is my first time running sub-50 seconds and it came at the right time,” said Aspire Academy graduate Hemeida. “These championships have given me a lot of experience so hopefully you’ll see me at the world senior championships in Doha next year.”
Alison dos Santos of Brazil, who also came up with his personal best, finished in 49.78 to claim bronze.
Meanwhile, Mohamed Ibrahim Moaaz entered the final of discus throw with an impressive effort of 59.46.
