Doha: The Qatar national team left for Suzhou, China, to take part in the Third Atlas Challenge to be held from July 18 to 23.
Qatar is clubbed with Australia, Lithuania and USA in Group B while 2019 FIBA World Cup hosts China are in Group A with Belarus, Ukraine and Iran.
“We’ve selected the players based on their performances. The tournament will help us to prepare for the FIBA Asia Cup in Lebanon next month and World Cup qualifiers in November,” said Qatar coach Kusay Hatem.
The Iraqi, who guided Al Gharafa to Qatar Cup and Emir’s Cup triumphs last season, selected a provisional 14-member squad.
“The boys are young, but motivated. They’ll gain experience by playing against some of the best teams including USA and Australia,” he added.
US-based Nasser Khalifa Al Rayes also found a place in the squad after joining the national camp early this month.
The 22-year-old, who studies mechanical engineering student at the California Institute of Technology, represents Caltech Beavers in the US University League.
“It was my dream to represent my country, but I couldn’t due to my studies and college basketball in the US,” he said.
Qatar will meet Lithuania on Tuesday followed by USA and Australia on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.
