Jakarta, Indonesia: Qatar handball team won beat Japan 24-17 in their third and final round at the Asian Games here on Friday.
The win put Qatar as group topper with six points while Japan has three.
The 2015 World Championships runners-up had earlier defeated Iran (35-20), Malaysia (64-11), Iraq (26-20) and Saudi Arabia (28-23).
They will now face South Korea in the semis on Monday.
Meanwhile, the Gulf nation will open their campaign in athletics on Sunday. The competition will continue till August 30 with 45 countries will vie for 47 medals in different events.
3x3 basketball team enter last 8
Qatar's 3x3men's team qualified for the quarterfinals by beating Jordan 21-7.
In the second match, they, however, failed to top the group after losing to Japan 15-21.
Japan started with a 4-2 win before Qatar team came up with a 7-7 lead and then progressed to 8-7 for the first time, but the former advanced 9-8 and 10-8.
In the second match of the same group, Syria beat Nepal 21-19, their second victory after defeating Jordan with the same result to become third in the group, leaving the last position for Jordan.
Qatar will meet group toppers on Sunday.
