Bangkok: Qatar failed to book their place in the AFC Futsal Championship after losing to 1-3 to Lebanon in a Group B match. Qatar, who had earlier lost to Jordan by the same scoreline, failed to finish in the top two slots as Lebanon and Jordan both qualified for the tournament to be held in Chinese Taipei in February 2018.
Qatar needed a three-goal margin victory to qualify, but they struggled to keep up with Lebanon's relentless attacks.
Lebanon opened the scoring in the 16th minute as Hassan Zeitoun found an opening after side-stepping two defenders to score from outside the box.
Serge Kouyoumjian capitalised on a bad pass from Qatar custodian Abdulrahman Mohsin to make it 2-0 in the 31st minute.
Issa Khalifan Almasoudi put Qatar on the scoreboard in the final minute, but Lebanon scored just seconds later with Zeitoun again finding the net.
“Our performance today was much better than yesterday. We focused on their weaknesses but didn't have many chances to score. This is Qatar’s new national team, and the players are young, but they are all equally talented as a team,” said Qatar coach Ahmed Rashid. “This is just the beginning for us, and in the future, we will definitely take part in any other tournament and win.”
