QATAR kept their chance of reaching the knockout phase of the Handball World Championship alive by beating Argentina 21-17 in a Group D encounter in Paris on Tuesday.
The winners led 9-2 at half-time.
Qatar, who had beaten Argentina when they met in the group stage at the Rio Olympics, were off to a fine start and did not give their opponents much of a chance.
Centre-back Kamalaldin Mallash and left-back Rafael Capote starred for Qatar while Danijel Sarjic was rock solid in the goal as always.
With their third successive defeat, Argentina are out of the competition.
The top four teams in each group advance to the round of 16.
Qatar, surprise runners-up in the last edition of the biennial tournament at home, began their campaign with a heartbreaking 20-22 loss to African giants Egypt. However, they quickly regrouped and beat familiar foes Bahrain 32-22.
Qatar’s next game is against European powerhouse Sweden on Wednesday. They will wind up their group engagements on Friday with a tough tie against Olympic champions Denmark.
Qatar included Lekhwiya left-winger Ahmad Madadi as replacement for El Jaish’s injured centre-back Abdalla Abdelrahman in the squad.
