Doha: Qatar appointed Argentinian Camilo Soto as the new volleyball coach of the senior national team on Saturday.
The 42-year old, who guided Argentina to the Under-23 world title in August, signed the deal in the presence of Qatar Volleyball Association President Ali Ghanem Al Kuwari and board member Mubarak Eid.
Al Kuwari expressed hope that Soto, who replaced Italian Massimiliano Giaccardi, would be able to take Qatar to greater heights.
“We chose Soto because we feel he is the right man to guide our youthful side. Soto made Argentina the U-23 World Champions, so he knows how to mould young players,” said Al Kuwari.
Soto, a former Argentina national team player, is currently under contract with Argentinian league side Gigantes del Sur, based in Neuquen and will join the Qatar team in April.
Soto said he was excited about his new job.
“It’s very exciting. I will work with the statistics man, with the trainers, coaches and I will gather as much information about the players, but I’ll get to know them the most on the court,” said Soto.
“I will think about the possibility of making two - teams A and B – so that I can have a bigger player pool to select from for the national side,” he added. “This will also improve the level of competition and the players. It’s a challenging task but I am confident."
Sato’s first challenge would be the FIVB Volleyball World League in June.
