WITH his rock-star looks, Rafa Cabrera-Bello could easily be mistaken for a Hollywood actor. The Spanish golfer, who finished tied second at the 2016 Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, is back at its 20th edition, which begins on Thursday. A water sports buff to the core, Cabrera-Bello spoke about life beyond the greens.
How’s it being back in Qatar?
I’m always comfortable playing here as the weather is so similar to the Canary Islands, where I come from. It’s sunny, there’s usually a nice breeze. It’s quite cool. So I really feel at home. The fans are nice and there’s always a relaxed atmosphere.
How did the Olympics and Ryder Cup debut go?
Though I didn’t make it to the podium at Rio, I’m proud of the way I played. Ever since my childhood when I started playing in the garden at my backyard next to a golf course, it was my dream to compete in the Ryder Cup. So it was a real honour to play in it finally.
What’s your favourite pastime?
I enjoy water sports and I’ve a house in Bali. I do surf a lot. I also like skiing, paddle boarding and cliff diving.
