LONDON Games bronze medallist Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah, who was one of Qatar’s biggest medal hopes, flattered to deceive as he failed to make it to the final round in skeet shooting.
Competing in his sixth Olympics, Nasser missed 14 targets in the qualifiers and was way below his usual self.
Compatriot Rashid Hamad Al Athba too disappointed, missing 16 targets.
Four years ago, Nasser had held the Qatar flag flying by beating Russia’s Valeriy Shomin in a shoot-off for third place.
But since then, Nasser, who is also an accomplished rally driver has found it difficult to hit the bull’s eye.
Though he swaps the wheel for gun regularly, it may be time for him to stick to one sport.
Qatar had a disappointing outing in athletics as well with sprinter Femi Seun Ogunode and 400M runner Dalal Mesfer crashing out in the heats. Men’s 400M runner Abdalelah Haroun, who reached the semifinal, was the saving grace.
Among other Qatari competitors, weighlifter Fares Ibrahim finished eighth in the men’s 85kg while boxer Thulasi Tharumalingham lost to Mongolia’s Battarsukh Chinzoring in the round of 32.
Meanwhile, Qatari show jumpers Ali bin Khalid Al Thani, Ali Al Rumaihi and Bassem Hassan Mohammed qualified for the third round.
