Nasser sets sights on Tokyo medal

QATAR’S Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah showed signs of regaining his form by winning skeet silver at the Qatar Open Shotgun Championships on Tuesday.

In his first competitive outing since last summer’s Rio Olympic Games, where he failed to qualify for the medal round, Nasser gave Frenchman Anthony Terras, the Beijing Games bronze medallist, a tough fight before losing 55-58.

Russia’s Anton Astakhov (46) bagged the bronze medal.

“After the Rio Games, I had told (Qatar Olympic Committee President) HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani that I would be cutting down on my motor sports commitment to focus more on shooting. I want to make amends for my Rio debacle with a medal in Tokyo 2020 and I think I’m on the right path. This is my first step towards it,” said Nasser.

The 46-year-old said it was the perfect way to prepare for the World Cup, which begins in New Delhi on Wednesday.

“I hope to continue the momentum,” added Nasser before leaving for the Indian capital city.

Earlier, Slovakia’s Danka Bartekova won the women’s title, defeating Russia’s Svetlana Demina 53-48 in the gold-medal round.

Another Russian Marina Belikova finished third.
