QATAR’S star high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim is eyeing a hat-trick of Diamond League gold medals.
Having won the season opener at home and in Shanghai, Mutaz, whose personal best of 2.43M is the second-highest effort in the world, has set his eye on the Oslo Diamond League meet on June 15.
The event in the Norwegian capital has attracted a strong field including world and Olympic champion Derek Drouin of Canada and Ukraine’s Bohdan Bondarenko.
Mutaz wants to make his mark in a guaranteed showdown between three Rio Olympic medallists in the fifth leg of the series.
“It’s been a good season so far with two wins already under the belt. I hope to keep the momentum going in Oslo,” said Mutaz who won with an effort of 2.36M in Doha and 2.33 in Shanghai.
Mutaz’s biggest challenger will be Drouin who pipped him for gold at Rio. The Canadian had failed miserably in Shanghai and will be looking for redemption in the battle between the world’s finest high jumpers. dsp
