Doha: After their 10-goal high against Al Arabi last week, Al Sadd managed to secure a last-gasp 1-1 draw against Al Gharafa in the QNB Stars League here on Sunday.
Vladimir Weiss scored in the 50th minute to put Gharafa in the lead, but Hassan Al Haidous converted from the spot in the final minute of the five-minute stoppage to help Sadd escape a defeat.
In another match, defending champions Al Duhail and Al Rayyan played out a goalless draw.
Sadd coach Jesualdo Ferreira didn’t expressed his dismay and said that he was apprehensive of a ‘difficult’ situation before the match.
“I had said last week that the match against Gharafa will be a tough one. The result proved that we didn’t play well and our opponents took advantage of our mistakes we made after the Baghdad missed the penalty,” said Ferreira.
The penalty was awarded to Sadd just before the end after Othman Al Yahri committed a foul on Akram Afif.
But it was a difficult for evening for the 2012-13 champions, who even spurned a penalty by their prolific scorer Baghdad Bounedjah in the 29th minute.
The penalty was awarded after defender Pedro was fouled inside the box, but goalkeeper Yusuf Hassan blocked Bounedjah’s shot.
Akram, who is also in great form this season, also found the going tough as Gharafa back-line proved a hard nut to crack.
“I’m disappointed with the result and at the same time feel sad for Ibrahim Majid who will miss the next round of matches due to injury,” added Ferreria. “We’re not mentally ready. The draw is a clear warning for our players to prepare themselves well before the next matches including the AFC Champions League.”
Though Sadd called the shots in the early part of the match, it was Gharafa who surged ahead against the run of play at the start of second half.
