ITTF Qatar Open: Qatar

DOHA: Qatar’s challenge in the doubles at the ITTF World Tour Platinum Qatar Open ended on a disappointing note when both the men’s and women’s pair lost their respective Round of 32 matches here at the Ali bin Hamad Al Attiya Arena (Al Sadd) on Thursday.

The familiar pair of Mohammed Abdulwahhab and Abdulrahman Al Najjar started off nicely against Ovidiu Ionescu and Alvaro Robles, but couldn’t maintain the momentum.

The former Aspire Academy cadets won the first 11-9 yet it wasn’t enough as they lost 6-11, 2-11, 9-11 in the next four games.

2012 Olympian Aia Mohamed, who paired with Maha Faramarzi, had little to offer against the technically superior Szu-Yu Chen/Hsien-Tzu Cheng of Chinese Taipei in the women's doubles. The Qataris lost 1-11, 6-11, 3-11.

Maha also lost her singles match against South Korea’s Kim Hayeong 2-11, 1-11, 2-11, 3-11.

Meanwhile, women’s world No.1 Ding Ning (CHN) struggled to overcome Chen Szu-Yu 12-10, 13-11, 11-7, 11-4 to move into the Round of 16.

Defending champions Liu Shiwen of China also marched into the next round with a clinical 11-9, 11-9, 11-5, 11-6 win over Sweden’s Matilda Ekholm.
