DOHA: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach emphasised on the rise of 5G technology as holding great opportunity for the Olympic Games in future.
“The digital future also offers us the opportunity to dramatically change the way that people experience the Olympic Games. This is why we are very excited about the advent of 5G technology because it will open up so many new and better ways to spread the joy, emotions and values of sport,” said Bach at the annual Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Tuesday.
Addressing an audience of 2,000 industry leaders and experts, the IOC head outlined his vision of how digital technology will transform the way that people experience the Olympic Games.
“People today are connecting with the Olympic Games in more ways than ever before,” said Bach on the IOC website. “This is not a challenge to overcome, but a huge opportunity to reach even more people with the values of sport and the magic of the Olympic Games.”
Bach also highlighted several ways in which the IOC is already shaping the digital future of Olympic Games.
“The Olympic Games were a social network and a kind of social media long before the internet and social media came about,” added Bach, who also participated in a private roundtable discussion led by HM King Felipe VI of Spain on the topic of intelligent connectivity. (Source: IOC)
