Doha: The Qatar Swimming Association (QSA) President Khaleel Al Jabir was announced as a FINA Bureau Member for the 2017-2021 term.
The FINA Bureau consists of President, Honorary Treasurer, five vice-presidents one from each of the five continents including the first vice-president and the second vice-president, and 18 additional members.
“I thank FINA for selecting me as one of the bureau members. It’s a big responsibility. We’ll work towards the sport’s development,” said Al Jabir.
From the 25 voting members of the Bureau, 17 are elected by the General Congress in accordance with the elections of their respective continental organisations including four from Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe and one from Oceania.
It must be mentioned here that Doha won the bid to host the 2023 FINA World Championships last year in Budapest, Hungary, last year.
The event promises to be one of the most compact in history with all venues, facilities and hotels located within a 15km radius.
Swimming, synchronised swimming, diving and water-polo will be held at the Hamad Aquatic Centre, which already hosted several international competitions including the 2014 World Championships and FINA World Cup series.
The open water competition and high-diving will take place at the iconic MIA Park, with Doha’s stunning city skyline as a backdrop.
“Doha is promising to deliver a unique opportunity for FINA. We’ve the desire, passion and commitment to deliver,” said Al Jabir.
