CHAMPIONS El Jaish began their Qatar League title defence in style, beating Al Khor 31-18 in the lung opener at the Qatar Handball Association (QHA) Hall last week. The winners led 16-8 at half-time.
Jaish, who won all but one of the 22 league matches last season, went on the rampage right from the start. The likes of Zarko Markovic, Kamalaldin Mallash and Rafael Capote gelled well as the Armymen played as a cohesive unit to pummel their opposition into submission.
With goalkeeper Darko Stanic parting ways with the club, Goran Stojanovis played his part at the goal with some outstanding saves.
Spanish coach Toni Gerona rotated the players reasonably well. Most of them, who represent the national team, got back into match groove after the Rio Olympics.
Jaish next take on Al Shamal on October 12.
Last year’s runners-up Lekhwiya beat Al Shamal 38-20 in another match. The 2013 champions led 20-8 at half-time.
