DAKAR winner Sam Sunderland lived up to his favourite’s tag in the bikes’ section of Qatar Cross-Country Rally.
The Briton, riding for Red Bull KTM 450 Rally, made it three in a row in Qatar as he finished 7min, 42sec ahead of Portugal’s Paolo Goncalves. Austrian Matthias Walkner, also riding for Red Bull KTM 450 Rally, finished third.
“It has been a good race and it has been as tough as always in Qatar with the navigation,” said Sunderland.
“I felt good and the bike was perfect and the team did a great job. We’ve a bit of a break now before the next one. So I’ve time to recharge the batteries and refocus.”
Poland’s Rafal Sonik survived a fourth stage suspension arm breakage to clinch a comfortable victory in the quad category.
Peru’s Alexis Hernandez recovered from a 40-minute time penalty, road book scrolling issues and a heavy landing in a hole to clinch the runner-up spot ahead of Dutch rider Kees Koolen.
