QATAR’S beach volleyball teams opened their campaign with contrasting victories at the Fifth Asian Beach Games in Danang, Vietnam, last week.
Qatar are fielding two teams in the biennial competition, which goes on till October 3.
Qatar’s leading pair of Jefferson Pereira and Cherif Younousse beat Pakistan’s Riaz Khan and Saqib Hussein 21-4, 21-7 with consummate ease.
Later, Qatar’s B team, comprising Julio Cesar Junior and Ahmed Tijan, were made to work hard before beating Vietnam’s Nguyen Dang and Huynh Vinh 20-22, 21-16, 15-12.
Qatar are also fielding entries in marathon swimming and beach handball.
Meanwhile, with the continent already set to stage a host of major events over the next decade, the Olympic Council of Asia, at its annual General Assembly held on the sidelines of the games, has decided to reschedule some of its championships. As a result, the Asian Beach Games will be held every four years instead of the current two.
