Brazil's Calderano eyes ITTF World Tour Qatar Open title

Doha: Top seed Fan Zhendong of China will start as the favourites against Brazil’s Hugo Calderano in the men’s final at the ITTF World Tour Platinum Qatar Open here in the evening.

Fan had defeated the Brazilian 4-1 at this year’s Hungarian Open, but given Calderano’s current form it could be a tough battle.

The 13th seed knocked out world No.1 Timo Boll of Germany 11-9, 11-9, 11-8, 7-11, 12-10 in the Round of 16.

Japan’s world No.12 Tomokazu Harimoto 11-5, 11-6, 11-5, 11-7 in the quarterfinals before upsetting third seed Lin Gaoyuan in straight games 11-9, 11-8, 11-3, 11-6.

“I am very happy that I could beat such a high-level player. I never would have thought that his would have happened. It is a great feeling to be from Brazil, non-traditional country and to be surprising top Chinese players at the highest level,” said Calderano.

In the women’s category, China’s Wang Manyu and Liu Shiwen will fight it out for honours in the singles final.

The men's final starts at 1700hrs local time.
