Bayern set date for Schweinsteiger testimonial

Berlin: Germany's World Cup-winner Bastian Schweinsteiger has been granted a testimonial by ex-club Bayern Munich against his current team Chicago Fire, it was announced on Saturday.

Schweinsteiger's farewell match to Bayern's fans will take place on August 28, 2018 at Munich's Allianz Arena.

"Bastian Schweinsteiger had an extraordinary career at Bayern Munich and was instrumental in an extremely successful era," said Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in a statement.

"With his outstanding personality, he was, and will always be, an important part of the Bayern family.

"As we see it, there is no doubt the player deserves a testimonial to say 'thank you' from  FC Bayern Munich."

Schweinsteiger joined Bayern as a 13-year-old and spent 17 years with the German giants winning eight Bundesliga titles and lifting the German Cup a further seven times.

He played a key role in Bayern winning the 2013 treble of Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup titles -- the only time a German club achieved the feat.

His crowning success was a magnificent performance in the 2014 World Cup final when Germany beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time.

He left Bayern for Manchester United in July 2015 after making 500 appearances for Bayern and scoring 68 goals in all competitions.

A knee injury hampered his first season at Old Trafford and Schweinsteiger was demoted to the Under-23 team when Jose Mourinho took charge in August 2016.

He retired from international football after captaining Germany to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 having made a total of 120 appearances.
