ITALIAN Alessandro Chianese braved heavy rains, strong winds and chilly conditions to win the double trap gold at the Qatar Open Shotgun Championship at Losail last week.
In a closely-contested final, Chianese quelled the challenge of home hope Hamad Al Marri 66-65.
Another Italian Marco Innocenti clinched bronze with a score of 48.
With New Delhi set to host the Shotgun World Cup from Wednesday, the Qatar Open helped the competitors finetune themselves.
Visibility was at a premium at Losail, with dark clouds hovering around the range all the time.
“It was a tough final. The wind was quite strong and we all had to work harder than usual. This was my first event of the season. I’m quite delighted with my form before going to India for the World Cup,” said Chianese.
Meanwhile, USA’s Casey Wallace won the men’s trap gold on his maiden trip to Qatar, defeating Russia’s Nikita Egorov 44-40.
Former Asian champion Hamad Al Kendi of the UAE won bronze, beating Poland’s Piotr Kowalszyk 32-28.
Earlier, Slovakia’s Olympic double silver medallist Zuzana Rehak Stefecekova edged Russian veteran Liudmila Pshenichnikova 38-36 to claim women’s trap title.
Iuliia Tugolukova, also of Russia, bagged bronze, beating New Zealand’s Natalie Rooney 30-25.
