THE International Handball Federation’s (IHF) 10th Super Globe tournament will be held from August 25 to 28.
It is for the eighth year in a row that the event, featuring four continental champions, a wild card and a representative of the host nation, will be held in Qatar.
“Once again we’ll bring handball in the spotlight of fans, sponsors and media worldwide, and thus further promote the sport. We wish all teams the best of luck and look forward to an exciting competition in the spirit of fair play,” said Qatar Handball Association (QHA) President Ahmed Mohammed Abdulrab Al Shaabi.
European powerhouse Fuchse Berlin are the two-time defending champions.
Last year, the German club had defeated formidable French outfit Paris Saint-Germain 29-28 in a thrilling final at the QHA Hall in Duhail.
They will be joined in the fray by African champions Al Ahly of Egypt, Asian winners Al Noor of Saudi Arabia, South American champions EC Pinheiros of Brazil and wild card entrants Sydney University of Australia.
A decision on Qatar’s representative in the competition will be taken later. Lekhwiya had competed last year. But with the proposal to merge Qatar League champions El Jaish with them and form a new team called Al Duhail Sports Club, it remains to be seen as to who will represent the country on the world stage.
Al Sadd are the only Qatari club to have won the tournament, a feat which they accomplished way back in 2002.
Spanish clubs have dominated the tournament, winning six of the 10 editions held so far.
