AUSTRIA’S Lucas Miedler beat Belgium’s Jonas Merckx 6-3, 6-3 to clinch the boys’ singles title of Qatar F3 Futures tournament at the hard courts of Khalifa International Complex last week.
It was third seed Miedler’s maiden title of the season and the first since Norway F2 Futures in September, 2016.
The 20-year-old, a former Australian Open boys’ doubles winner, was in good form in the $15,000 prize-money tournament.
He dropped only one set, to Russia’s Vitaly Kozyukov in the quarterfinal, in the week-long tournament.
Meanwhile, Mubarak Shanan, Qatar’s sole representative in the draw of 32, crashed out in the second round to eventual finalist Merckx 1-6, 3-6.
Mubarak had beaten Bahrain’s Yusuf Qaed 6-4, 6-1 in the first set, but Merckx proved too good for the Qatari youngster.
Meanwhile, Sweden’s Markus Erikkson and Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz won the doubles.
They beat American-Dutch duo of Anderson Reed and Sem Verbeek who retired in the final with the scores at 1-6, 3-3.
