AS THE Diamond League season is set to start, Mariam Fareed, one of Qatar’s most promising female athletes, is raring to go. The 19-year-old was a part of Qatar’s successful bid team for the 2019 World Championships. The sprinter spoke about why she chose the sport and her goals.
How excited are you as the Diamond League approaches?
Competing in front of everyone I know in my home country motivates me to run faster. It’s something I’m very proud of.
Sprint King Talal Mansour has singled out you for special praise…
It’s a matter of pride for me to hear a respected athlete like him speak about me. I take this as an inspiration and will prepare to the best of my abilities and try to do well.
What made you choose the sport?
I love athletics because it teaches you to be independent, improves your self-confidence and makes you responsible.
I want to achieve something and build a legacy. I want to change the perception about women’s sport. I want to show the world that wearing the hijab doesn’t mean we can’t compete internationally.
