Almoez double guides Al Duhail to 3-1 win over Al Arabi

DOHA: Almoez Ali was in elements with a double strike on Friday that helped Al Duhail defeat Al Arabi 3-1 in the Qatar Stars League at the Al Arabi Stadium.

The Qatar international struck early in the fourth minute and then added his second in the second-half added time while Paulo Edmilson (33rd minute) was the other scorer.

Hamdi Harbaoui converted a penalty in the 19th to equalise, but that was it as Duhail stepped up the pressure to quash their challenge.

With this win, Duhail, who are the only unbeaten side in the competition, took their points tally to 33 points while Arabi have 18.

It was a confident victory by Duhail, who overcame the double blow of losing the Qatar Cup final to Al Sadd and then Rui Faria resigned as head coach.

Their 10th victory achieved under caretaker coach Bruno Oliveira should give boost their confidence as they chase the league shield after 2017-18 season.

Almoez found the target from close with Sultan Al Breik doing the spadework from the left with a cross, but Arabi bounced back when Harbaoui sent Duhail goalkeeper Amine Lecomte the wrong way from the spot.

The penalty was awarded after Mohamed Emad tripped Harbaoui inside the box.

Edmilson, who replaced Yousef Msakni in the Duhail attack after 28 minutes, got into the scoring act by connecting a defence-splitting through pass by Almoez.

Arabi were reduced to 10 men in the 78th when Fahad Ali was red-carded for a stud-up challenge on Moosa.

Almoez then rounded off the tally at the stroke of final whistle as he fired into an open net.
