Doha: Al Ahli picked up their second successive wins in the QNB Stars League by beating Al Rayyan 2-0 in a 11th round match here on Thursday.
Qatar international Mohammed Muntari, who missed a sitter when he only had the goalkeeper Oumar Barry to beat in ninth minute compensated with a smart finish 10 minutes later after he was picked up by Yasin Chikhaoui inside the box.
The home team added the second in the 38th when captain Ali Ahmed Ghaderi’s powerful shot hit the crosspiece and touched the goal-line following a swift counter-attack.
Just before Ahli's opening goal, Rayyan could have gone ahead but Sebastian Soria’s shot hit the bar. In fact, the former Qatar international was unlucky to have also missed an early chance in the second minute.
Rayyan showed a lot of promise in the first 15 minutes, but Michael Laudrup's side lacked the firepower to quell Ahli's challenge.
The victory against the 2015-16 champions will definitely give Ahli a lot of confidence after a rathar insipid start in the initial rounds. They now have 13 points from 11 matches while Rayyan dropped to third after suffering their second defeat.
