EGYPT’S Al Ahly emerged as winners in ‘The 12th Player’ seven-a-side tournament organised by the Aspire Zone Foundation for fan clubs at its academy dome last week.
In the final of 16-team tournament, Ahly defeated Qatar’s Al Arabi 1-0. Local side Al Gharafa finished third after beating Italy’s AS Roma 4-0 in play-off.
Salah (Al Gharafa) emerged as the top scorer while Mohammed Al Fuhaida (Roma) and Mohamed Fay (Arabi) bagged the awards for the best player and best goalkeeper respectively.
Tournament Director Mohammed Al Hamadi, who highlighted the quality of teams and level of support by the spectators, said the AZF was planning to make the event an annual affair.
“We’re planning to make it an annual affair and are looking for ways to build on this success. We also plan to extend invitations to GCC fan clubs,” said Al Hamadi.
Meanwhile, Aspire Logistics defeated Aspetar 2-1 to win the Aspire Workers Cup, held alongside ‘The 12th Player’ Tournament.
ASPIRE Academy Education and Students Care Director Badr Al Hay, Corporate Services Director Ali Sultan Fakhroo, Aspire Logistics Deputy Chief of Operations Rashid Al Khalifa and Aspetar Human Resources Assistant Director Abdulrahman Al Mulla gave away the medals and trophies.
