DOHA: Akram Afif scored the all-important goal as Qatar overcame Switzerland in an international friendly in Lugano on Wednesday evening as domestic leagues across the world took a break for a week to allow national teams play international friendlies.
Qatar will take on Iceland on Monday.
Afif ran on to a throughball and rounded goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo before shooting into an empty net.
The win against the world’s No.8 side that boasts of stars like captain Granit Shaka and Xherdan Shaqiri, who came off the bench as half-time substitute, would definitely boost Qatar’s preparation for the AFC Asian Cup in January.
Qatar had been quite impressive in their recent friendlies, beating China and Ecuador and drawing with Iceland.
Switzerland coach Vladimir Petkovic retained the core of his squad who played the World Cup but give opportunities to a lot of youngsters to showcase their skills.
