Doha: India’s Dhvaj Haria scripted the first upset of World Billiards 2017 150-Up format when he defeated former world champion Mike Russell 3-2 in the World Billiards Championship at Al Arabi Sports Club in Doha on Thursday.
Russel had a good start to the match, as a 129-point break gave him the first game. He scored a 133-point break in the second, but still could not take Haria from winning it 151-135.
Though Russel won the next game 150-73, thanks to a 108-point break, Haria blasted through the fourth game 151-0 before taking the fifth 150-140 for a memorable victory.
In another match Dhruv Sitwala of India defeated Robert Hall of England 3-2.
It was not a good day for Qatar’s Khamis Alobaidli as he lost 2-3 to Myanmar’s Chit Ko Ko and also to Singapore’s Peter Gilchrist 0-3.
Myanmar’s Aung Htay defeated India’s Brijesh 3-0 while his countryman Nay Thway Oo downed Siddharth Parikh, also of India 3-0.
